Imbalance

While guiding an expedition on Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, I took on a personal photography project focused on the local guides, porters, and staff. It felt important to confront a reality often overlooked: the uneven power dynamic where wealthy outsiders scale the mountain, relying on the tireless labor of locals. Through my lens, I aimed to shift attention and respect towards the people whose strength, skill, and resilience make these expeditions possible. Each image sought to challenge the imbalance, highlighting not only their incredible work but also their individual stories and humanity beyond a service role imposed by a system that often fails to recognise this historic power imbalance.

This was an analogue photography project shot on my old Nikon FM2 with Ilford Delta 100 film and developed in Adox FX39ii
